Sustainability for Institutional Architecture

The complete renovation of the former Istituto Pitagora and its functional transformation into the new headquarters of the Regional Administrative Court of Lombardy represented a highly complex intervention. The challenge was to reconcile the demand for a fast and cost-effective construction process with the need to deliver modern, efficient, and user-friendly offices.

The project created new workspaces for administrative staff and magistrates, as well as areas for archives, courtrooms, waiting rooms for lawyers, reception areas for filing and exchanging appeals, and a library.

In keeping with sustainability goals, the design prioritized the use of eco-compatible materials. The roof was built with solid wood planks and wood-fiber panels, while the new walls were made of hollow brick with external insulation in mineralized wood fiber. Office ceilings feature milled natural wood panels and plasterboard sheets, and the flooring combines porcelain stoneware with recycled stone.

The VRV heat pump system and lighting design were developed to optimize the building’s energy performance, while particular attention was given to the safety and emergency systems in the archive areas.
