Milanese Courtyard Complex
Milanese Courtyard Complex
Milanese Courtyard Complex
This residential complex, located in a densely populated district of north Milan, is an urban infill project designed to recover the last industrial site within a predominantly residential neighborhood. Following the demolition of the existing low-rise industrial buildings, the lot was redeveloped with a series of interconnected volumes, forming an original reinterpretation of the traditional Milanese courtyard. The scheme features buildings of varying heights that all overlook the central courtyard, with side passages opening the volumes to the urban fabric

The design aimed to recreate the social dynamic of historic Milanese courtyards, where daily life revolved around shared spaces. Careful articulation of volumes and overhangs ensured that no apartment was disadvantaged in terms of views, while also providing summer shading and winter sunlight in most internal rooms.

Thermal comfort is achieved through solar panels and natural ventilation. The housing units typically feature a living room with kitchen and one or two bedrooms, expandable horizontally to three bedrooms, and in some cases even vertically. Alternative layouts include duplex apartments, with living areas on the lower level and sleeping areas above.
